ColoCap Study
York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded £3 million to lead national research into a technology that could improve the clinical pathway for the diagnosis of bowel cancer. The research, called the ColoCap study, will compare the new procedure, known as colon capsule endoscopy to the standard procedure which is called colonoscopy. The study will involve participants who are being investigated for suspected colorectal cancer, IBD-Ulcerative Colitis or on polyp surveillance having a colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) alongside their scheduled colonoscopy.
The study will open in January 2025 in 30 hospitals across England, Wales and Scotland, aiming to recruit approximately 1000 participants.
The Trust is working in partnership with leading academics in England, Scotland and Wales as part of the study. Staff from York will be working with the University of Aberdeen, Centre for Healthcare Randomised Trials (CHaRT), Cardiff University Centre for Trials Research, Southampton University and colleagues at The University of York and the York Health Economics Consortium.
The research, which has been funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), marks a huge milestone for York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals and is the biggest project we have ever undertaken to fund a national clinical diagnostic study.
